Timescales of magma transport in the Columbia River flood basalts, determined by paleomagnetic data

چکیده

• We present a method that can constrain the active lifetime of igneous intrusions. apply this to eight feeder dike segments Columbia River flood basalts. Some were for <1 month, others several years. Magma discharge rates as high 1–8 km 3 day −1 during individual eruptions. Flood basalts represent major events in Earth History, part because they are linked large climate perturbations and mass extinctions. However, durations basalt eruptions, which directly impact potential environmental crises, poorly constrained. Here we use combination paleomagnetic data thermal modeling create magnetic geothermometer (MGT) transport magmatic conduits MGT technique (CRB), demonstrating some actively heating host rocks less than one while other may have been Results suggest eruption rates, localized spatially along-strike segments, . These results help contextualize field evidence contrasting CRB pathway constraining tempo global magmatism is beyond resolution geochronology.

Columbia River flood basalts from a centralized crustal magmatic system

The Columbia River Basalt Group in the northwestern United States, comprising about 230,000 cubic kilometres of rock, exhibits unusual patterns in lava distribution, geochemistry and its apparent relationship to regional tectonics. Consequently, there is little consensus on the origin of its magmas. Here, we examine the isotopic ratios of Sr, Nd, Pb and Os and traceelement abundances in Columbi...

Growing magma chambers control the distribution of small-scale flood basalts

Small-scale continental flood basalts are a global phenomenon characterized by regular spatio-temporal distributions. However, no genetic mechanism has been proposed to explain the visible but overlooked distribution patterns of these continental basaltic volcanism. Here we present a case study from eastern China, combining major and trace element analyses with Ar-Ar and K-Ar dating to show tha...

On the evolution of large ultramafic magma chambers and timescales for flood basalt eruptions

[1] Large igneous provinces are characterized by magmatic activity on two distinct timescales. While these provinces have total active lifetimes of order 10–30 Ma, most of the erupted volume is emplaced within 1 Ma in many cases. The longer timescale is consistent with plume or tectonic models for mantle melting responsible for flood volcanism, but the shorter “main stage” timescale is enigmati...

Understanding cratonic flood basalts

The origin of continental flood basalts has been debated for decades. These eruptions often produce millions of cubic kilometers of basalt on timescales of only a million years. Although flood basalts are found in a variety of settings, no locale is more puzzling than cratonic areas such as southern Africa or the Siberian craton, where strong, thick lithosphere is breached by these large basalt...
